The Washington State Chapter of the American College of Surgeons supports the practice, teaching, science, fellowship, and standards of surgery throughout Washington.

The Washington State Chapter, ACS seeks to engage Washington State surgeons in the activities of the American College of Surgeons. The chapter provides a common meeting ground for surgeons across specialties and career stages while supporting education, fellowship, advocacy, and the highest standards of patient care.
Chapter History
The American College of Surgeons was founded in 1913, two years after the Seattle Surgical Society. The Washington Chapter was established in 1951, with Dr. Joel Baker serving as the first Chapter President. Dr. Baker later became President of the American College of Surgeons in 1970.
Washington’s chapter history includes leaders such as Dr. Herbert Coe and Dr. Henry N. Harkins, whose commitment to postgraduate surgical education and resident scholarship continues through the chapter’s annual meeting and Henry Harkins Resident Competition Awards.
